Project Notes: The Double Secret Probation Summer Project

For six months I have been working on this project, considering unusual films to watch with stringent selection criteria. While doing so I have learned that when it comes to under-the-radar titles, there is no shortage.

I am a student. I had a summer off with time to kill. So, the consideration was born, “What about all those other titles that bubbled up during the selection process, but were beaten out by the most magnetic of trailer clips?”

Depending on where you are located, the public library can serve as an EXCELLENT source for new and interesting titles. I was quite surprised by how many of the runner-up titles were within my reach once I mined the public library system.

THE DOUBLE SECRET PROBATION SUMMER PROJECT: view as many of the runners-up as possible to get a feel for how accurate the Jinni genome is when hooking us up with films containing the specific qualities we look for.

RESULTS: Accurate enough to enthusiastically endorse it as a reliable tool.

Here is what we did on our summer vacation:

x Bassackwards (2010)
x The Broken Circle Breakdown (2012)

Titles marked x…

Bassackwards is a sad accounting of a road trip taken by a consummate slacker. This film bore absolutely no reward. Broken Circle might have been better if it had been produced by an American film team. I’m suspecting bad editing as a possible cause of disappointment. There were definitely some juvenile responses to adult situations that made Circle intolerable.

– Beginners (2010)
– Beautiful Boy (2010)
– Everything Put Together (2000)
– The Last Sin Eater (2007)
– The Myth Of Fingerprints (1997)
– Monster’s Ball (2001)
– Sherrybaby (2006)

Titles marked -…

The titles above came just a tad shy of delivering the jolt we expected. Nevertheless, they are excellent productions and worth a look. We’re betting there are a few titles in this group like The Myth of Fingerprints that may require more than one viewing to discover the gem waiting inside.

Titles marked +…

Homerun, delivers all the excitement of a well-crafted drama, completely compelling and absolutely worthy of our highest recommendations.

++ Fireproof
++ Gimme Shelter
++ Flannel Pajamas
++ The Company Men
++ The World According to Garp
++ The Prince of Tides
++ Detachment

Titles marked ++…

These titles were snuck in not having been included in the SleeperQuest selection process. These are titles with all the earmarks of a SleeperQuest favorite introduced from another source. All were worthy, thumbs up. Detachment is the hands-down favorite here.
